*Question & Answer Insulation*Dear Bob How come we can use the same insulation in the summer and winter? Dear LG The point of insulating is to slow the transfer of heat either out of or into a conditioned environment. In most cases, that environment is your home. During cold weather, the goal is to keep heated air inside and stop or at least slow the movement of cold air from the outside. During hot weather, the objective is reversed, but the principles for slowing heat transfer remain constant regardless of the direction of heat flow. Where it is installed in your house is critical to how well it does its job.
Dear Bob I've had several contractors tell me that I need more insulation in my attic, more ventilation, and the insulation is in the wrong place. I'm confused? Dear MS Insulation which blocks and prevents ventilation in an attic can also result in condensation, creating a condition that fosters mold in the framing elements of the house. This can affect your home's structural integrity. Check to make sure air can circulate freely through the attic space. Eaves must not be covered by insulation. Air needs to go in through the eave vents and out through the roof ridge vents, gable vents or turbines.
