*Question & Answer Environmental*

Dear Bob

My plumber told me that my oil burner problems are likely being caused by sludge in the bottom of my buried oil tank. Can the sludge be removed safely or do I really need a new tank?

Dear JA

I suggest that you take this opportunity to replace your old oil tank with a new one that is either installed in your basement or outdoors above the ground. An old buried oil tank is a problem waiting to happen. Oil leaking from your tank can contaminate a small amount of nearby soil or it can cause an environmental nightmare by polluting the groundwater. Cleanups from these issues can run into thousands of dollars.
