It was about 20 years ago and I had just become unemployed. With a lot of time on my hands, I started to get to work on my house that had been ignored for a long time. Since I had the time andnot a lot of money I was going to have to do the work myself!!

Spring came around and a friend of mine asked me if I would like to help him rebuild a fire damaged house. The house was in the Hamptons; a great place to be for the summer.

I went to check out the place, or what was left of it. The only things we were able to save were the foundation, most of the floor and a couple walls.

Our plan was to do as much work as we could and hire subcontractors that would let us work beside them so that we could learn some of their trade. We learned a lot from these guys and still today bump into each other and always talk about that house!

The house sold and I was again out of work. The difficult thing for me was figuring out what I wanted to do. I had a lot of fun on the house project and figured I would like to do something in the construction industry.

I saw an ad for a Handyman franchise and thought to myself that this might be a good idea. I researched several handyman franchises and tried to pick their brains as best I could. They were all pretty much the same. They charge d a large franchise fee, a percentage of your sales and wanted pages of reports! A franchise was not for me but I liked the business concept and decided to go it alone.

I hired a couple with their own tools and trucks, put some ads in the local papers, the phone started ringing and away we were off and running. The business kept growing and as of 2008 I had a customer mailing list of over 5000 people. Friends were always asking me for advice and I was always happy to give it. Some even wanted me to write me to write a book. The book idea didn't really interest me, so my friends finally convinced me to create a website.

So here it is. I hope that you find my Encyclopedia of Home Improvements a useful tool. There is a tremendous amount of information here for you and it is all FREE!
